Keep in mind that when choosing a metal for your wedding band, it’s good to take the time to research all of your options. Not many consumers take the time to do this, and relying on a store to give you 100% accurate information may not be a good thing to do.

I am a BIG fan of platinum. When you compare the weight of platinum to other metals, you can feel a difference. Platinum is a heavier metal that will hold together. When you refinish a piece of platinum jewelry, its mass is hardly affected, as the metal is actually pushed back into place when scuffed. So when you scratch a platinum wedding band, platinum is not actually taken away from the ring – it’s just moved around a bit. Therefore, a platinum wedding band can be repeatedly refinished to almost continually look like new. Not a bad deal at all!

However, I do understand why people buy wedding bands made in titanium and tungsten. They are cool looking metals, and feel interesting as well. But because neither metal can be sized, you should stay away from buffets and ice cream should you buy an alternative metal wedding band.

Did you know that white gold is not really naturally white? And that white gold does not come from the ground resembling its finalized state, but is actually yellow gold that is combined with other elements and often covered in rhodium to make it appear white. Over time, the natural yellow color of a “white” gold wedding band will probably start to show through. Icky!

Platinum is a naturally white metal that is strong, durable and also pure. A diamond held firm in a platinum setting is secure, and its color will appear to remain true. There is little risk of the metal naturally weakening over time, so set aside any worries that a valuable diamond can be accidentally lost through everyday normal wearing – platinum literally safeguards your diamond investment. Whew!

Platinum also has value due to its rarity. Throughout history, rare items have been coveted by society. Whether it is a prized painting or a superstar’s rookie baseball card, the rarer it is, the more it is perceived to be worth. So for jewelry, value is important. And it takes a lot of time and effort to mine platinum as well. If you have ever wondered about the metal’s mining process, feel free to read Bruce Pucciarello’s article about a trip to the South African platinum mines. It is eye opening and very interesting.

In any case, it is important that consumers educate themselves about the metals available for engagement rings and wedding bands. Through the years, I have found that not all individuals take the right amount of time to learn more about platinum, palladium and/or gold, and run the risk of making a buying decision based solely upon a jewelry store employee’s sales pitch, or perhaps from bits and pieces of discussions held during a recent cocktail party. Should you need help with decided on the metal that is right for you, Novell has created a free brochure that is available as a PDF download. Take advantage of it. After all, and educated consumer is the jewelry industry’s best customer. And I bet they sleep better at night, knowing that they made the choice that’s right for them without guessing. Sweet dreams!

Palladium is a good choice over white gold is platinum is just not an option. But at this time, the market value between gold and platinum is a few hundred dollars, so for a little more, you can get a naturally white metal that does not lose its mass over time. White gold is not naturally white, and can be scratched off during wear and tear. Platinum is the ultimate choice for your jewelry. It’s worth it.

Platinum is definitely the superior choice for metals. Diamonds set in platinum look great, and platinum is naturally strong. By setting your diamond in platinum, you are literally protecting your investment. When you scratch platinum, little mass is removed, so platinum and be refinished over and over. By paying a little more now, you get a ring that lasts a lifetime. And beyond!

With today’s economy being a mess and everyone looking to save some money, palladium is a good choice over white gold if platinum is just not an option. But at this time, the market value between gold and platinum is a few hundred dollars, so for a little more, you can get a naturally white metal that is very durable. Palladium has similar characteristics, and currently costs less than white gold. Keep in mind that white gold is not a naturally white either. However, if you are looking to truly save a few bucks, then consider palladium. But platinum is totally worth the investment.
